What Is Neurointerventional Radiology?

Neurointerventional Radiology (also known as Neurointerventional Surgery or Endovascular Neurosurgery) is a sub-specialty that performs minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and treat diseases of the brain, head, neck, and spine.

The era of neurointerventional radiology really began to take place in the early 1990s when the first brain aneurysm was treated from inside the arteries as opposed to an open brain surgery. Since then technology and advances in medical devices have allowed neurointerventional radiologists to treat many life-threatening conditions that affect the blood vessels of the brain. Just some examples include a blockage in the brain artery which could cause a stroke, or a break in a weakness in the artery of the brain (aneurysm) which could cause a brain bleed. The physicians of Texas Cerebrovascular and Stroke Institute strive to educate their patients and provide the best medical care for neurovascular conditions.
