An emergency radiologist is trained to protocol and interpret studies that frequently present to the emergency department or in the acute in hospital setting. This includes special training in all modalities of diagnostic radiology including CT, MRI, x-ray, and ultrasound.
The emergency radiologist is an expert in the imaging workup of medical and surgical emergencies. This includes such emergencies as pulmonary embolism, stroke, acute appendicitis, ectopic pregnancy, and traumatic injury.
Emergency radiologists complete a one year fellowship and must be versatile in all imaging modalities. Emergency radiologists work closely with Emergency Department physicians and acute care physicians in order to rapidly diagnose and treat the acutely ill or injured patient.
